HALIFAX, N.S. – Liberal and NDP MLAs failed to support a PC motion at the Public Accounts Committee that opposes those earning over $100,000 per year taking a space in public housing.
MLA for Colchester North Tom Taggart was perplexed that the NDP and Liberals failed to support the motion, given that the average income in Nova Scotia is $58,482 per year.
“I can’t think of a good reason for why the NDP and Liberals, after failing to build new public housing, think it’s okay that people earning over $100k per year take up much needed spaces in public housing,” said Taggart. “I urge both opposition parties to rethink their positions for when the motion is voted on in January.”
While the opposition chose to talk out the clock instead of voting, they made their views on the motion clear.
NDP MLA Lisa Lachance stated “We won’t be supporting this motion.” Meanwhile, interim Liberal Leader Derek Mombourquette tried to have it ruled out of order.
The PC government is investing more than $250 million to build 515 new public housing units, which will provide homes to more than 1,300 Nova Scotians. This represents the biggest investment in public housing in 30 years.
