Free Shingles Vaccine Now Available for Seniors 65+

Starting today, May 20, Nova Scotians aged 65 and older can book an appointment for their free shingles vaccine, with the first appointments beginning May 28. This new initiative is part of our PC government’s commitment to supporting seniors and removing financial barriers to healthcare.

Shingles is a serious viral infection that affects nearly one in three Canadians. It causes an extremely painful, burning skin rash and nerve pain that can last for weeks or even months. For many seniors, the symptoms can be debilitating and life-altering. While a shingles vaccine has long been available, the cost—about $400—has made it inaccessible for many.

“Across Canada, nearly one in three people develop shingles, despite the availability of the vaccine,” said Premier Tim Houston. “That’s why we are delivering on our promise of removing barriers to access and making the shingles vaccine free.”

Eligible seniors can book their appointments by visiting novascotia.ca/routinevaccine.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to prioritize seniors’ health and well-being. Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness, emphasized the PC government’s focus on Action for Health:

“We are committed to investing in things that matter and that make a real impact on the day-to-day lives of Nova Scotians. We know how severe the symptoms of shingles are, and the good news is that it can be easily prevented.”

Barbara Adams, Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care, highlighted the importance of the PC government’s efforts to remove cost barriers for older adults:

“The free shingles vaccine is life changing for older Nova Scotians. For many people, the high cost made the vaccine out of reach. By breaking down barriers to care, we are protecting more older Nova Scotians from the needless suffering that comes with this awful virus.”

By offering the shingles vaccine for free, our PC government is taking another critical step to support seniors, safeguard their health, and help them age with dignity.
