Brendan Maguire is an experienced public servant, legislator, and lifelong community advocate with a career rooted in resilience, leadership, and service. As the MLA for Halifax Atlantic, he has spent over a decade advancing inclusive policies, strengthening public services, and championing the voices of underrepresented communities.
Brendan currently serves as Nova Scotia’s Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, where he leads the province’s efforts to modernize curriculum, support educators, and ensure every child has access to high-quality early learning and education. He is also the Minister of Advanced Education, overseeing post-secondary education, workforce readiness, and the strategic advancement of Nova Scotia’s colleges and universities.
In his role as Government House Leader, Brendan coordinates legislative priorities, manages the government’s agenda in the House of Assembly, and works to ensure the smooth and effective passage of legislation. Previously, he served as Minister of Municipal Affairs, supporting local governments and infrastructure, and as Minister of Community Services, overseeing key social programs including child welfare, income assistance, and disability support.
Raised in care, Brendan brings a lived experience that informs his deep commitment to equity, dignity, and opportunity for all. His leadership is defined by pragmatism, compassion, and a relentless drive to deliver real results for Nova Scotians.
Brendan proudly lives in Herring Cove, where he is raising his children in the same community that helped shape him. While public service is his calling, he says his greatest job in life is being a father to Oliver, Rufina, and Isla. He is the best friend and husband to the love of his life, Rena Maguire, and shares his days with Sadie, their loyal dog and one of his best friends.
