Design work is underway for eight new public housing apartments on Caldwell Road that will give about 25 people in Eastern Passage a place to call home.
“Everyone deserves a comfortable, affordable place to call home,” said PC Housing Minister John White. “That’s why government is building more homes, faster. I am happy that we can bring more public housing to people in Eastern Passage as part of our plan.”
"The number one thing I hear from folks here in Eastern Passage is that they want to stay right in our community—and this announcement will help make that happen. Our government is committed to making life more affordable for Nova Scotians, and I’m thrilled to see this investment coming directly to Eastern Passage," said Barbara Adams, Deputy Premier and MLA for Eastern Passage.
The apartments will be close to schools, daycare, shopping, employment opportunities and transit. Each will have a private entrance, a patio or balcony, energy efficient appliances and a heat pump for heating and cooling. Two apartments will be fully accessible, and the others can be made accessible if needed.
Tenants will pay no more than 30 per cent of their before-tax income in rent. Construction is expected to start next year.
This project is part of our PC government’s five-year housing plan and its commitment to build 515 new public housing units across the province.
