Medical students at the Cape Breton Medical Campus are beginning classes in the new medical sciences building today, August 24, marking another important milestone in our PC government’s work to train more doctors and improve access to healthcare in rural communities.
The new medical sciences building is the cornerstone of the Cape Breton Medical Campus, a partnership between Dalhousie University’s faculty of medicine and Cape Breton University. It represents a real investment in the future of healthcare in Cape Breton and across rural Nova Scotia.
“Our government is making sure Nova Scotians in rural communities have reliable access to the healthcare they need, close to home,” said Premier Tim Houston. “By training more doctors in Cape Breton and prioritizing students with rural experience, we are helping build a stronger pipeline of physicians who understand these communities and are committed to serving them. This new medical sciences building is a critical step toward better care for families across Nova Scotia.”
This new chapter builds on the strong start made last year, when the inaugural cohort of 30 medical students began their studies in temporary space at the former Nova Scotia Community College campus while the new building was under construction. Today, 30 new first-year students are beginning classes as the class of 2029 moves into second-year studies, doubling the number of students attending the Cape Breton Medical Campus.
This is the kind of practical action that makes a lasting difference. Admissions to the Cape Breton Medical Campus prioritize qualified Nova Scotia applicants with lived experience in rural communities, helping ensure more future doctors understand the people and places they will serve. Through return-of-service agreements, students have committed to practise family medicine in rural areas of the province after graduation.
The new facility features modern learning environments with advanced technology for connected classrooms, a full anatomy lab and a state-of-the-art clinical simulation centre. These are the tools students need to train close to home and build a stronger future for healthcare in Nova Scotia.
