Our PC government continues to build up communities across Nova Scotia.
Earlier this month, Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman announced $120,000 in provincial funding from the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund to support a major energy upgrade design for the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth.
Joined by Ministerial Assistant Melissa Sheehy-Richard and Nick Hilton, MLA for Yarmouth, this announcement highlights our commitment to helping local infrastructure remain efficient, sustainable, and affordable for decades to come.
What the Funding Means for the Mariners Centre
The Mariners Centre has been a cornerstone of Yarmouth and surrounding communities since 2001. Host to up to 1,300 spectators for hockey games, figure skating, and major events, it serves as the home ice for the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s Yarmouth Mariners.
This new $120,000 investment will fund detailed engineering and technical design for a comprehensive energy retrofit of the facility.
Key upgrades being planned include:
- Upgraded Heating and Cooling: Replacing older heating and ventilation equipment with modern, high-efficiency units to improve indoor air quality.
- Ice Plant Overhaul: Modernizing or replacing the ice plant to lower power usage.
- Lower Operating Costs: Reducing energy bills so savings can be reinvested directly back into municipal services and local programs.
- Lower Emissions: Cutting greenhouse gas emissions to keep our communities clean and green.
Supporting Yarmouth’s Growth
This energy design grant builds on our government's ongoing support for the Mariners Centre. Nova Scotia has already invested $7 million into the facility’s major expansion—which features a new aquatics centre, fitness facilities, and multi-purpose spaces expected to open early in the new year.
By investing in green infrastructure today, we ensure that community facilities like the Mariners Centre stay open, safe, and affordable for local families, athletes, and visitors for years to come.
